Elizabeth McGovern is one of the only Americans on the British series Downton Abbey. She plays Lady Cora Crawley Countess of Grantham. She was born and raised outside of Chicago Illinois. At 12 she moved to California where her Father accepted a teaching position at UCLA. There she attended Oakwood School in North Hollywood where she acted in plays and did community theater. An agent witnessed her early on stage talents and urged her to take acting lessons. She took that advice to heart and after high school she went on to study at Julliard in New York City.
In the early 80′s while in college she appeared in her first movie role Ordinary People. Her big break came when she played Evelyn Nesbit in the American film Ragtime. She was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. Added to her movie career McGovern did several television roles mainly in the UK. Elizabeth was on series such as the Scarlet Pimpernel. Hugh Bonneville her works with her on Downton Abbey worked with Elizabeth on the comedy series Freezing. As Cora Crawley in the PBS hit show Downton Abbey she was nominated for an Emmy for Best Supporting Actress and Golden Globe in 2011.
