Boxing Champion Floyd Mayweather’s nickname is Money. He made $40 million in his fight against Victor Ortiz and $45 million fighting against Miguel Cotto. Forbes named him their highest paid athlete and Kevin Durant also was on the list at #34.
He was born in Grand Rapids Michigan in 1977. He grew up and was raised by a family of boxers and fighters. His father who he was named after was a former welterweight contender. His Uncles were also professional fighters. Mayweather also faced a series of personal and emotional struggles he had to fight through in his household. His aunt died of AIDS from Drug use. He describes coming home from school and finding drug needles in his yard. He lived in a rough neighborhood and many members of his family and friends were susceptible to the harsh environment.
His grandmother raised him and was the only stable guardian in his life. His father although successful in his youth in sports had gotten on drugs and as a result was incarcerated. Floyd says his grandmother surprisingly was the one who encouraged him to become a boxer. She always saw potential in him. He concentrated all his efforts into boxing and dropped out of high school.
Today Floyd is an undefeated boxing champion. Mayweather is a two-time Ring Fighter of the Year (winning the award in 1998 and 2007). He also won the Boxing Writers Association of America (BWAA) Fighter of the Year award in 2007 and the Best Fighter ESPY Award in 2007, 2008, 2010 and 2012. He is undefeated as a professional boxer.
